Undefined Jawline/Jowls
What is a jawline?
A jawline refers to the lower contour of the face, running from the chin to the angles of the jaw. An aesthetically ideal jawline is typically defined, smooth, and well-contoured, contributing to a balanced, youthful, and structured look. For many, a well-defined jawline enhances the face's overall appearance by creating a clear distinction between the face and neck.

The mandibular angle of males tends to be bigger than females in both size and shape. Males tend to have a more pronounced gonial angle, larger inter-gonial width, and more distinct antegonial notch then females.
What are Undefined Jawline and Jowls?

Undefined Jawline: This occurs when the jawline lacks a clear contour or separation from the neck, giving a softer and less structured appearance to the lower face.

Jowls: Jowls refer to sagging skin or fat deposits that hang below the jawline, usually along the sides of the face. This can blur the jawline, making it less defined and contributing to an aged or heavy appearance in the lower face.
Symptoms of Undefined Jawline and Jowls:
-
Lack of definition along the jawliine, making it difficult to distinguish from the neck
-
Sagging skin along the jaw area, often due to the development of jowls
-
Heavier lower face appearance as a result of excess skin or fat along the jawline
-
Loss of contour between the face and neck, creating a rounder or softer facial structure

Causes of Undefined Jawline and Jowls:
-
Aging: As we age, collagen, elastin, and subcutaneous fat decline, which leads to skin laxity and sagging, especially in the lower face.
-
Genetics: Some people naturally have a softer or less defined jawline due to their bone structure and genetic predispositions.
-
Weight Gain and Fat Accumulation: Excess fat can accumulate along the jawline and in the lower face, leadign to the appearance of jowls.
-
Bone Density Loss: Bone loss in the jaw area, which happens with age, can reduce the structural support for the skin and contribute to sagging.
-
Lifestyle Factors: Factors like poor posture, lack of skincare, and habits such as smoking can accelerate the loss of skin elasticity, contributing to jowls and a softer jawline.
Undefined Jawline and Jowls Treatment Options:
Option 1: Teosyal RHA4, a hyaluronic acid-based filler, is effective for adding structure and support to areas like the jawline, where volume loss contributes to sagging and jowls. By injecting dermal filler along the jawline, we can add contour and definition, lifting and supporting sagging skin to create a sharper jawline. The filler can help 'lift' the skin in the lower face by restoring lost volume, reducing the appearance of jowls and making the jawline appear more structured. Teosyal RHA4 is designed to adapt to facial movements, ensuring that the results look natural.
The results are immediate and can last 15-18 months, depending on factors like metabolism and the filler type.

Option 2: Botulinum toxin can be used to relax certain muscles around the jawline and in the neck, which helps in contouring the lower face and reducing jowls. Botulinum toxin can be injected into the platysma muscle (the thin sheet of muscle covering the neck) and other areas of the lower jaw to reduce the downward pull on the jawline. This can create a subtle lift and a more defined jawline. In the Nefertiti Lift procedure, botulinum toxin is strategically injected along the jawline and into the platysma to relax the muscles, giving a smoother and more lifted appearance. While it does not reduce fat or add volume, botulinum toxin can improve jawline definition by tightening the area, making it appear slimmer and more youthful.
The results would show gradually and with full results in 2 weeks. It can last for 4-6 months and require repeat sessions to maintain the effect.

Option 3: Fat-dissolving injections (Lemon Bottle or DesoFace) are designed to reduce localized fat, such as that found in jowls or along an undefined jawline. These injections contain deoxycholic acid that disrupt fat cell membranes, causing the fat cells to break down. The body then naturally metabolizes and removes these destroyed cells. Reducing the volume of fat in the jowls or along the jawline can create a more defined jawline and reduce the saging appearance. Most patients are satisfied with their results after 1-2 sessions but our experts would assess with you during your consultations if you may need multiple sessions for optimal results.
