Double Chin
What is Double Chin?
A double chin is an area of extra submental fat beneath the chin, resulting in a layer or fold that can appear as a second chin. It can also be influenced by skin laxity as a result of aging. Over time, this buildup of fat results in a visible fold and can give the face a heavier appearance and reduce the definition of the jawline and chin.

Symptoms of a Double Chin:
-
Excess fullness under the chin, creating a 'second chin' appearance
-
Lack of jawline definition, which can make the face appear rounder or heavier
-
Skin laxity in the submental area (beneath the chin), sometimes appearing as sagging or loose skin
-
Difficulty achieving a contoured look in the neck and jawline area, even with weight management
Causes of a Double Chin:
-
Genetics: Some individuals are more prone to store fat in the submental area, often due to genetics.
-
Aging: Aging results in a natural loss of skin elasticity, which can contribute to sagging and the appearance of a double chin.
-
Weight Gain: While not always the case, weight gain can lead to excess fat accumulation beneath the chin.
-
Poor Posture: Over time, poor posture can weaken the neck muscles and contribute to the appearance of a double chin.
-
Bone Structure: A smaller chin or a jawline that recedes can make the neck area look fuller.
Double Chin Treatment Options:
Option 1: Lemon Bottle or DesoFace are fat-dissolving injections designed to reduce localized fat in the double chin area by using deoxycholic acid. These injections contain ingredients that break down fat cell membranes. Once injected, the solution disrupts fat cells, causing them to break down. The body then naturally metabolizes and removes these destroyed cells over time.
Fat-dissolving injections can reduce the volume of fat under the chin over a series of treatments. Patients usually see gradual results as the body processes the fat, with the full effect visible after 2 weeks. Most patients are satisfied with their results after 1-2 sessions but our experts would assess with you during your consultations if you may need multiple sessions for optimal results.

Option 2: Botulinum toxin injections can also treat a double chin when injected into the platysma muscle. The platysma is a thin sheet of muscle that runs from the jawline down to the collarbone. Injecting botulinum toxin into this muscle relaxes it, which can help reduce neck sagging and smooth the contour of the jawline.
Botulinum toxin in the platysma does not directly dissolve fat but rather tightens and lifts the area, creating a more defined appearance. Results usually last about 4-6 months, with follow-up sessions to maintain the effect.

Option 3: Hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers can be injected into the chin and jawline to enhance definition and reduce the appearance of a double chin by contouring the area. By injecting dermal fillers into the chin or jawline, we can create a stronger more defined lower face structure. This added structure can help balance out the face, creating the illusion of a more contoured jawline and a reduced double chin appearance.
Dermal fillers do not remove fat but improve the aesthetic balance of the face, making the double chin less prominent. Results are immediate and generally last from 15 months to 18 months.

In some cases, a combination of treatments (fat-dissolving injections followed by dermal fillers) would provide the optimum results for achieving a more defined chin and jawline.
